Techniques for visualising light–matter interactions with nanometre-scale resolution have generally been limited to producing two-dimensional images. Ashwin Atre and colleagues now describe a tomographic approach that extends this capability to three dimensions. Crucial in this picture: the various tilt-angles of the nanoparticles. The depiction of the electron-beam is a challenge on its own. Lights, electrons, transparency and beams are always a challenge.
